19503. Cuba, Potential for International Business: Country Risk Assessment.

New, Winter/Spring 2017 This paper, written from the perspective of a U.S.-based investor, provides a risk and opportunities assessment of Cuba as a location for international business and investment. Following an economic, political, and cultural overview of Cuba, the paper profiles the operations, marketing, and human resources management aspects of doing business in Cuba. Economic prospects are viewed as relatively bright over the next five years. While significant political risks to operating in Cuba remain, recent normalization of U.S.-Cuban relations predict a more favorable political risk profile in the coming years. 19389. China Unbalanced Harvard Business School Case Study 9701010 Solution

This paper provides an overview and analysis of Harvard Business School business and government relations case study by Diego Comin and Richard H.K. Vietor on China and the Chinese economy in a globalizing world during the years following China’s accession to the World Trade Association (WTO). The time setting for the case study is late 2010. The case focuses on Chinese economic conditions and the impact of rapid export-led economic growth from both the domestic perspective and the perspective of China’s major trading partners, especially the United States. Drawing on information from the case itself as well as numerous outside scholarly and business sources, the analysis addresses questions related to the costs of benefits of China’s WTO access, the possibility that China will face a major “bubble” related to its arguably over-heated economy, whether or not China’s rise in world markets has been in the United States’ national interest, the domestic and international issues raised by China’s high growth rates, and the Chinese government’s current strategy for dealing with its accelerating growth rate. APA Style. 17 pages (sold as 12 pages), 51 footnotes, 31 bibliographic sources. 5745 words.

19373. Home Ownership Trends in Great Britain

Forecasters agree that home ownership, which has declined significantly over the past decade, will continue to decline through 2025. This research paper provides an overview and analysis of home ownership trends in Great Britain since the early 20th century, when only about 10% of British households were home owners through the present time. The analysis begins with a discussion of the growth of home ownership and the rise of the welfare state during the period 1897-2000. The impact of the Rent Act, large scale public housing programs, the Right to Buy program, and banks’ entry into the mortgage market are considered. The second part of the paper considers housing trends from 2003 to the present, a period which has seen a decline in home ownership and a rise in rentals. The impact of rising prices, declining affordability, and the 2008 financial crisis are considered. A final section looks to the future and makes predictions about home ownership in Britain over the next decade. Harvard Style. 12 pages, 74 footnotes, 24 bibliographic sources. 3,201 words.

19200. The Ethanol Commodity Market.

This paper provides an overview an analysis of the market for the biofuel ethanol, considering supply, demand, price, exporting, importing and recent developments with an emphasis on the period from early 2007 through early 2010. The analysis discusses in detail the position of the two largest producer/suppliers – the United States and Brazil – and looks at factors affecting demand in these countries and the rest of the world. The essay identifies and discusses the factors affecting price volatility in the ethanol market and looks at the controversy over the use of food crops to produce biofuel versus food. The research paper concludes that despite recent setbacks in production and demand, advances in technology and predictions of a rebound in the market makes fuel ethanol a worthy commodity for consideration by investors. It is recommended that foreign investors should look towards Brazil, the major exporter of fuel ethanol. APA Style. 16 pages, 27 footnotes, 16 bibliographic sources. 3,640 words.

18788. The Gold Standard in the International Economic System.

This paper discusses the rise and decline of the gold standard in the international monetary system. Starting in the late nineteenth century, the gold standard was seen as an effective way to unite the economies of the world’s nations. However, the gold standard was eventually dropped because it encouraged monetary authorities to place national interests above domestic interests, and governments were not always able to maintain the gold reserves needed to back up their currencies. 18710. The Economies of the United States and Russia, 2000-2008.

This paper compares the economic policies of the United States and Russia during the presidencies of George W. Bush and Vladimir Putin. Certain similarities, as well as differences, can be seen in how Bush and Putin dealt with economic issues. It is noted that the US economy declined catastrophically during the Bush presidency and, although Russia profited from oil revenues, it too was facing severe economic problems by 2008. It is argued that the policies of the US and Russia contributed to the economic problems of both nations. 18676. Arguments Against Globalization.

In this paper, it is noted that globalization has been criticized even though there are also benefits to be found in the trend. For example, it has been claimed that globalization gives too much power to organizations, enriches developed nations while impoverishing underdeveloped ones, undermines local cultures, and shuts out the voice of the opposition. The paper includes a discussion of the relationship between anti-Americanism and anti-globalization, rebuttals to the anti-globalization views, and the proposals that have been made for reforming the system. The paper also notes the managerial implications of the topic (i.e., it is helpful for managers to know about the pros and cons of globalization). Includes a table of contents. APA Style. 20 pages, 36 footnotes, 12 bibliographic sources. 4,037 words.

18530. Nafta and u.s.-canada-mexico Relations.

As discussed in this paper, NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) was established in 1994 in order to create equal trade relations between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. However, analysts have argued that that the agreement has resulted in a “dual-bilateral” system rather than a true “trilateral partnership,” as originally intended. This seems to be due to the U.S. adopting a perspective of realism (emphasizing self-interest and national security) rather than the perspective of liberalism, as implied in the wording of the NAFTA document. 18222. Heaven’S Door (George J. Borjas).

This paper reviews and critiques chapter 10 of Borjas’ book, which is concerned with the economic impact of America’s immigration policy. The author argues that the current policy, based on allocating visas to immigrants with family ties in the nation, displaces native-born workers and burdens the nation’s welfare system. Instead, there should be a policy based on accepting immigrants that have desirable skills. The reviewer agrees with Borjas’ basic argument that America’s immigration policy should provide more protection to native-born citizens. KEYWORDS: book review immigration policy economics. 18177. Malaysia-United States Free Trade Agreement.

This term paper traces the history of the attempt to create a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Malaysia and the United States in 2006 and 2007. Following a brief discussion of the advantages of free trade agreements in general and the US policy position on bilateral versus multilateral trade agreements, the paper focuses on Malaysia-US trade issues and the proposed FTA. The five rounds of trade talks beginning in March 2006 and ending in May of 2007 are discussed. The two sides sought to open the Malaysian market to U.S. financial services and auto-makers while opening the American market to imports of rubber, timber, garments, plastics, chemical and agricultural products, optical and scientific instruments, and electrical and electronic goods, by dropping duties, currently 5 to 32 percent. Malaysia also sought technical support to give it an advantage over other Asian countries, making it attractive for biotechnology and for high-end technical research and development. The paper considers the reasons for the breakdown in talks, noting the importance of Malaysian concerns about access to generic medications and opposition from the Malaysian agricultural sector as well as US concerns about intellectual property, patent protection, labor laws, environmental standards, and access to government contracts. 18030. Problem of High Oil Prices.

This paper addresses the fact that oil prices have been increasing at a dramatic rate in recent years. Taking an economic perspective on the topic, it is noted that the classic laws of supply and demand are not adequate for explaining the situation. This is basically because oil is a product of low price elasticity. It is a necessity and thus demand does not decline with a rise in prices. In addition, because of supply disruptions, there has not been an increase in supply despite the incentive of higher prices. The paper also considers the roles of OPEC and market investors in inflating oil prices. KEYWORDS: economics supply and demand oil prices oil pricing. 17753. Turkey’S Planned Accession to the European Union (Eu).

Based on a review of both primary (European Commission and European Council documents related to Turkey’s accession, statements and speeches by principals involved in the negotiations) and secondary (scholarly analysis in books and journals, as well as recent newspaper reports), this paper provides an overview and analysis of Turkey’s planned accession to full membership in the European Union (EU). The prospects of Turkey’s success in its pursuit of full EU membership are evaluated based on an analysis which considers resistance and support for Turkey’s EU accession; the arguments for and against Turkey’s accession; the impact of Turkey’s accession (should it occur) on the EU organization and EU members, considering potential advantages and disadvantages of Turkey becoming a full member of the EU; and a brief consideration of Turkish government and public opinion on its accession to the EU, focusing on the perceived benefits for the EU. It is argued that Turkey’s prospects for successful completion of the EU accession process seem highly improbable, based primarily on the unlikelihood that Turkey will meet EU political and legal criteria as they relate to Cyprus, human rights, and fundamental freedoms. It is recommended that the EU shift the strategic objectives of its negotiations with Turkey from the current focus on full membership to an alternative focus leading to a “special” or “privileged partnership”. 17584. Oil Prices.

This paper analyzes how oil prices are related to the law of supply and demand. While the law of supply and demand says that higher prices will decrease demand for a particular commodity and create an incentive for producers to increase their supplies, these rules have not applied to oil prices in the 2000s. Notable in 2005 was the fact that despite high oil prices, demand remained strong. The concluding section explores the possibilities/difficulties in developing alternative fuels. As a discipline, IPE encompasses several theories derived from three main conceptualizations or ideologies: mercantilism, liberalism, and Marxism. This paper compares and contrasts the three main conceptions of IPE. 17375. Mass Consumption, 1880-1940: A Comparative View: The United States & Western Europe.

This essay examines and analyzes the key characteristics of American mass consumerism during the period 1880-1940 and considers how this mass consumerism compared to mass consumption in Britain and Western Europe during this period. The investigation looks at the social, political, and economic aspects of mass consumerism during this period and considers some of the ways in which consumption patterns and responses were affected by class, race, and gender. It is argued that the basic drivers of mass consumption and basic markers of its development were quite similar in all the countries observed, although the timing of the emergence of mass consumption often differed markedly between the countries. The role of the state in shaping consumerism and the emergence of some variation of a “citizen consumer” is another commonality noted. Despite many similarities in the basic patterns of mass consumption that emerged in America and in the industrialized nations of Western Europe, it is argued that national culture, history, population, geography, economy and politics provided a unique character to mass consumption as it emerged in each of the countries examined. KEYWORDS: mass consumption consumerism mass consumerism comparative western European american. APA Style. 26 pages, 78 footnotes, 33 bibliographic sources. 7,572 words.

Labor strife, mixed signals for South Korea’s new president, the political/security threats posed by North Korea, foreign executives’ and employees’ distaste for the Korean environment, and growing anti-Americanism are viewed as the central obstacles to recapturing the rapid rate of FDI growth seen in 1999-2000. 15666. Local Government in Economic Development: Western Europe vs. North America.

This paper provides an overview and analysis of the factors contributing to the historic differences between Western Europe (both as independent nations and as the European Union) and North America (the U.S. and Canada) in the involvement of local government in economic development. The analysis begins with an overview of locally-based economic development and regional policy in the two regions. Following this, the analysis considers some of the specific factors which have contributed to the differences in these two regions' approach to local economic development, considering in particular structural issues (e.g., political-legal structure, population, urban structure, etc.), regional policy objectives, and differences in labor mobility. It will be argued that the European-North American differences in local economic development programs and general approach to regional policy have both been unintentionally shaped by forces related to geography, demography, structure of government and the weight of history, and have been deliberately shaped by each region's formal or defacto regional policy objectives. 15665. Regional Unemployment in Europe & Uk.

In terms of finding a solution to the problem of regional unemployment, one school of thought holds that, "The basic cause of local or regional concentrations of unemployment must be a lack of sufficient jobs, and the answer is thus essentially to create more jobs." This essay critically analyzes and discusses that assertion with respect to the situation in the UK and throughout Europe. The paper argues that while the assertion is over-simplified and lacking in specificity critical to solving the problem of regional unemployment disparity, it is rooted in truth. The underlying veracity of the statement is made evident through an examination of the specific causes of regional unemployment and by looking at the results of various efforts to reduce regional unemployment disparities. The essay argues that solutions to the problem will require job-creating strategies specifically targeted to the locality and the category of effected workers, particularly the most vulnerable manual laborers and less skilled female workers. 15661. The Argentine Economic Crisis and Dollarization.

This paper provides an overview and analysis of the current economic crisis in Argentina. The analysis considers the background and history of the crisis, its major components and symptoms, the steps taken to-date by both the Argentine government and the international community to deal with the crisis, and the appropriate strategies to be tried in the future. In particular, the analysis considers the extent to which "dollarization" may alleviate some of Argentina's current economic woes. It is argued that in addition to maintaining its nationwide austerity program while simultaneously working closely with the poorer provinces to address the disparate social impact of the economic crisis, Argentina should embark on a dollarization program. 15653. Long-Term Competitive Advantage & Globalization.

This essay analyzes Alfred Chandler's views (as expressed in his 1990 book, Scale and Scope) on managerial enterprise and international comparative advantage with a view towards assessing its relevance and validity for contemporary economic, market, and organizational structures. Considers whether Chandler's views on managerial enterprise rely too heavily on the U.S. ideal to adequately explain the long-term comparative success of nations and their industries. Argues that while Chandler's (1990) historical analysis provides an excellent explanation of the rise of the modern industrial organization and the factors of comparative success from the emergence of the organization in the late 19th Century up until World War II, changes in the global economic structure and concomitant profound shifts in the international competitive environment render much of Chandler's analysis inapplicable to an understanding of contemporary factors in comparative success. 17 pages, 26 footnotes, 11 bibliographic sources.

15610. Regional Disparities and Infrastructure Investment in the Eu.

This paper discusses and critically evaluates the assertion that: "Public infrastructure investment by the European Union [EU] does little to improve cohesion: such investment tends to assist economic development in richer regions relative to those that are poorer." Drawing on examples from studies examining the actual and/or projected regional impacts of various infrastructure projects, it will be argued that the assertion that infrastructure investment does little to improve cohesion is overly simplistic. While it is true that there appears to be a natural bias for such investment to assist economic development in richer versus poorer regions, and although it is also true that in some specific cases regions in the periphery have experienced disproportionately adverse impact as a consequence of investment in some supranational infrastructure projects, it is argued that under the proper circumstances, infrastructure investment can serve as a force for economic and social cohesion and as a tool for reducing inter-regional economic disparities. 14 pages, 33 footnotes, 10 bibliographic sources.
