18848. Criminality Across the Lifespan.

This paper explores recent studies taking a life-span development approach which challenge traditional sociological assumptions about the constancy of criminal behavior throughout the lifespan. Critical to these studies is the realization that the link between anti-social behavior in children and criminal behavior in adults is a link that works in only one direction: adult criminals almost invariably showed marked anti-social behavior as children, but most children who exhibit anti-social behavior do not become criminals as adolescents or adults. APA Style. 5 pages, 10 footnotes, 9 bibliographic sources. 1,219 words.

18701. Evaluation of the “Community Works” Program.

This paper reviews an evaluation study by Melde, et al. (2006) of the Community Works program, which is designed to help youth at risk of antisocial and illegal behaviors. The study focused on “program fidelity,” or the extent to which instructors have implemented the program as intended by the program’s developers. The review concludes that the study makes an important contribution to the research literature and that the authors provide some useful recommendations for improving the program’s effectiveness. 17752. Childhood Delinquency to Adult Criminality: Pathways & Preventive Interventions.

This paper draws on established theories of criminology (specifically Hirschi’s and Gottfredson & Hirschi’s control theories) to explain an important turn in a child’s life (hypothetical case) related to severe family disruption and social isolation that seem to have led him, now that he verges on adulthood, to a sustained criminal career. The next section of the paper briefly articulates the young criminal’s point of view, explaining how he sees his life opportunities lying only within the criminal realm. The concluding section proposes a program aimed at high-risk high school students to ameliorate familial contributing factors to juvenile delinquency/adult criminality. APA Style. 16 pages, 43 footnotes, 21 bibliographic sources.

17708. A Quantitative-Qualitative Study of Religiosity & Delinquency.

This paper presents a research proposal for a quantitative-qualitative study of religiosity and delinquency. The purpose of the study is to confirm and clarify previous findings concerning the religiosity-delinquency relationship and to explore facets of religiosity and potential relationships between religiosity and delinquency among current delinquents and gang members. A meta-analysis of previous quantitative studies of the impact of religiosity on delinquency will test the hypothesis that religiosity is inversely related to delinquency as well as hypotheses related to contexual aspects of the religiosity-delinquency relationship. Religiosity and its association with delinquency among current juvenile delinquents and members or affiliates of youth gangs will be explored through semi-structured interviews with delinquents, gang members and adults connected with delinquent youth. Strict APA Style throughout. 17 pages, 48 footnotes, 23 bibliographic sources. 4,285 words.

17640. Shoplifting and Social Learning Theory.

After a brief overview of the scope of the problem of shoplifting by adolescents, this paper analyzes social learning with the view that it provides the most appropriate means for explaining the crime of adolescent shoplifting. Adolescent shoplifters learn their behaviors by communicating with and observing peers who shoplift. By contrast, they fail to form the types of social attachments that would be helpful in reducing shoplifting and other criminal behaviors. 17390. Social Disorganization Theory of Crime and Delinquency.

This paper describes and analyzes the social disorganization theory of criminology as developed from theorists in the Chicago School. Considers how the more recent work of Robert Sampson and William Julius Wilson has extended and refined Shaw & McKay’s work to have application in the contemporary era, particularly with regard to urban crime and racial differences in crime. Finally, the analysis looks at Sampson, et al’s construct of collective efficacy as an explanatory variable in why people in socially disorganized communities commit crime. 17163. The Pathology of a Homicidal Child: Mary Bell.

This paper profiles the English child criminal Mary Bell, who, in 1968 at age eleven, killed a 4-year-old and a 3-year-old boy in her hometown of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. Drawing in Gitta Sereny’s (1972,1999) books on the case and Bowlby’s (1969, 1973, 1980) attachment theory and other supporting works, the paper presents an explanation of why she killed her two young victims. In keeping with the findings of the court appointed psychiatrists in the case, it is argued that Mary could rightly be classified as a child psychopath at the time of the killings and that this psychopathology explained her behavior . It is argued that Mary Bell’s psychopathology developed as a result of her insecure attachment to her mother. 14 pages; 19 footnotes; 15 bibliographic sources. 3,898 words.

15620. Systematic Gender Bias in Youth Justice in England and Wales.

A brief overview and analysis of systematic discrimination against young women and girls in the youth justice system of England and Wales. Argues that while the existence of gender bias in the system is indisputable, its nature is complex. On some levels (e.g., cautions versus sentencing) young women appear to be treated more leniently than young men. On the other hand, young women are treated more harshly than young men in terms of sentencing on first convictions and remanded to secure local accommodations. Other areas of juvenile justice showing evidence of gender bias include disparate treatment for status offenses, differences in prison environment, differential policies on adult/youth mixing, and the preoccupation with sexual aspects or possible sexual consequences of young women's criminal behavior. KEYWORDS: discrimination against women girls gender bias uk juvenile justice system britain. APA Style. 10 pages, 15 footnotes, 10 bibliographic sources. 2,771 words.

15460. Treating Kids Like Adults: Transformation in Juvenile Justice.

This research paper provides an overview and analysis of the "criminalization" of juvenile justice, examining the reasons behind and the initial consequences of juvenile defendants being treated as adults as a matter of the public policy. The analysis traces the evolution of this trend, looking at the reasons for the shift in juvenile justice philosophy and considering the range of procedures used to carry out the policy. The essay also considers apparent consequences and impact (both in terms of intended and unintended effects) of the policy so far as it can be discerned. It is argued that the policy of trying juveniles as adults (and relatedly, sentencing juveniles as adults) is contrary to the public interest. 13488. Labeling Theory and Juvenile Justice.

Drawing on the crime causation theory of labeling theory, this paper argues that labeling theory must be considered in the formulation of juvenile justice policy. Argues that the current “get tough” policies are likely to have long range negative effects on juvenile crime and delinquency. Alternatives to the “get tough” policies, including intensive supervision, group homes and decriminalization, are discussed. 14 pages, 25 footnotes, 17 bibliographic sources.
