Melamine: Food Contamination Risks From a Common Food Packaging Product.The 2007 and 2008 melamine food adulterations involving pet food and infant formula heightened fears about the risks associated with a global food supply and sparked a strong reaction against Chinese food or food supply imports. While the 2007/2008 melamine-related deaths and illnesses were the result of deliberate food adulteration by Chinese food manufacturers, these cases also raised concerns about the possibility of inadvertent melamine food contamination and its implication for human health. Following an overview of the structure, properties and applications of melamine and its close chemical analogs (some of which are also implicated in melamine’s toxicological aspects), this paper considers the role of melamine in the 2007 and 2008 animal feed and food adulteration scandals and the toxic potential of melamine through its legal and accepted use in food packaging products.
