This paper presents an overview and analysis of the links between fashion magazines’ depiction of thinness as the ideal female form and distortions in girls’ and women’s body image, leading to body dissatisfaction and contributing to the development of eating disorders among women who internalize these standards. Drawing on examples from fashion magazines and a review of scholarly literature on the topic, the analysis explores the process by which women may come to internalize the impossible standards of the fashion magazines and grow dissatisfied with their own forms as well as the evidence linking fashion magazine depictions with increased body dissatisfaction and the development of eating disorders.
