19386. Benzodiazepines: Short-Term Effectiveness and Long-Term Harm

New, Fall 2017. This paper provides an analytical review of the scholarly literature on the safety, efficacy, and potential harm of long-term (greater than three months) use of medications in the benzodiazepine class. As background, current prescribing/use patterns, as well as basic pharmacology and clinical indications for the use of benzodiazepines are profiled. To place the investigation of long-term benzodiazepine use in context, the literature on the safety, efficacy, and risks of short-term benzodiazepine use is also briefly reviewed. The major issues explored through the review include current usage/prescribing patterns, pharmacology of benzodiazepines, clinical effectiveness of benzodiazepines, adverse effects in short- and long-term use, addictive potential, withdrawal protocols and interventions, withdrawal syndromes, special concerns with use of benzodiazepines in the elderly, and prescribing guidelines. A concluding section summarizes the findings, discusses the ethical implications for psychologists, and offers recommendations.
