This paper discusses the characters and plots of three short stories: “A Rose for Emily” (William Faulkner), “Miriam” (Truman Capote) and “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (James Thurber). Each story deals in one way or another with the theme of isolation and delusion, demonstrating the idea that delusions occur when people do not have normal social outlets for expressing their fears and anxieties.
