This paper provides an analytical review of the literature focusing on the question of whether or not hospice care truly reduces medical costs at the end of life. Compares hospice end-of-life care to that delivered in a hospital or nursing home setting and attempts to determine if there are cost differentials to be found when hospice care is provided in a family home setting as opposed to an institutional setting. Concludes that hospice care is more humane and less costly than hospital care at the end of life. The research on costs of home hospice versus institutionalized hospice care have produced mixed results. KEYWORDS: hospice terminal care end-of-life care nursing home health car.
