This paper provides a case analysis and alternative case solutions to a Harvard Business School case study on HealthSouth Corporation (Herzlinger & Cheung, 2006). The case provides detailed background information on HealthSouth’s rise and expansion from its 1984 founding through its near-collapse during the period 2002-2004. Although considerable background information on HealthSouth’s history and rise is provided, the time setting for the case is early 2005. The case is considered from the perspective of major decision-maker (for the case) Nair Huang, a general partner in the private equity firm White Rock Capital. In early 2005, Nair is considering whether or not to recommend that his firm purchase any (or all) of HealthSouth’s ambulatory surgical and diagnostic centers and rehabilitation facilities. Following a summary and problem situation analysis of the case study, the paper appraises HealthSouth’s investment opportunities from Nair’s perspective, with a special focus on legal issues and issues related to Medicare payment and reimbursement as they affected HealthSouth during the period 1987-2005. The case analysis includes a case summary/situation analysis, problem identification, discusses of the causes of the problem, analysis of legal and financial issues, discussion of alternatives, recommendations and implementation plan.
