18078. Edward Hall’S Cultural Unconscious. This paper discusses the views of Edward T. Hall (expressed in Beyond Culture) on the existence of a "cultural unconscious" that covertly drives human behavior. According to Hall, bureaucratic institutions play a role in perpetuating this phenomenon. In addition, he argues that there is a need to go "beyond" culture in order to alleviate the problems caused by failures in cross-cultural communication. The paper also includes a discussion of how Tzvetan Todorov's book The Conquest of America provides ahistorical illustration of Hall's view of culture as an "irrational force."
