The Dobe Ju/’Hoansi: A Hunting & Gathering Society Confronts Modernity.This paper provides an overview and analysis of the Dobe Ju/’hoansi (a band of indigenous hunters and gatherers living in the northwest Kalahari Desert) and the global forces influencing them. After a brief discussion of !Kung Bushmen nomenclature, the first part of the paper provides a general orientation on the Dobe Ju/’hoansi, considering their racial and linguistic antecedents, location, population, social structure, historical relations with other societies and recent historical occurrences. The second part of the paper examines the recent (present-day) circumstances of the group, looking at the external forces influencing them and their internal and external resources available for cultural survival. A concluding section makes suggestions on future research and comments on the problems and benefits of the various reference materials used.
