Describes the opera and its faithfulness to James’ original story, noting critical differences. Considers how Britten makes use of musical elements to express emotions and characterization in the opera. Argues that “The Turn of the Screw” demonstrates Britten’s brilliance as an operatic composer and concludes that notwithstanding certain differences from the original story, Britten’s work does an excellent job of capturing the haunting mood of Henry James’ story.
