Chang’s book is concerned with three generations of women (the author, her Maoist mother, and her traditional grandmother) in 20th century China. This paper examines how the accounts of these three women reflect social and political changes in China during their lifetimes. Emphasis is placed on three key issues: the treatment of women, the experience of political oppression, and conditions of hardship.
