This paper provides a critical overview and analysis of women’s imprisonment in Great Britain during the 19th and 20th centuries. The first section provides a brief background on the history of women’s imprisonment in Great Britain and looks at women’s imprisonment during the first half of the 19th century. The second section, covering the period 1850-1895, looks at women’s imprisonment in Britain during the consolidation and centralization of the system and the shift to a highly punitive model. The third section, covering the period 1895-1960, reviews the gradual establishment of the 20th century model of rehabilitation. The fourth section covers the period from 1960 up to the present-day and considers important recent trends and shifts in women’s imprisonment, including the emphasis on the medical/psychiatric model, the increase in the number of female prisoners, and the changing demographics of women prisoners in Great Britain.
