The lure of Rome for artists, scholars and travelers in the eighteenth and nineteenth century is examined in this paper. The rise of Rome as the central repository of Renaissance and the Baroque masterworks, as well as its position as the site of ruins and statuary from the classical, is described. Various aspects of Neoclassical style and taste as they relate to the art and culture of eighteenth and nineteenth are noted.
