Labor Unions.This investigation compares labor union history, development, structure and future in the U.K. and U.S. The first section of the paper examines the origins and early history of trade unions in each country, examining the role of tradition and the cultures of class conflict in their formation and looking at similarities and differences in their basic structure and development. the next section of the paper traces labor union development in each country through its period of legitimization through the second half of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century and on to its heyday in the mid-to-late 20th century, concluding with a brief summary on the key features and differences in each system. The final section of the paper examines the phenomenon of labor union decline in each country, considering the principal reasons for the decline, looking union responses, and speculating on the future of unionism in each country. 25 pages, 82 footnotes, 36 bibliographic sources. |
