Academic Term Papers Catalog WESTERN VIEWS OF JAPANESE SOCIETY. |
||||||
| 18122. WESTERN VIEWS OF JAPANESE SOCIETY. This paper examines various anthropological and literary works, and questions the extent to which it is possible for Japanese society to be understood through a Western point of view. Works by Western anthropologists, works by Japanese writers using Western languages, and translated Japanese texts are considered. Examples are drawn from the writings of Irit Averbuch, Inazo Nitobe, Toshio Kawatake, Kin-nosuke Natsume, and Lafcaido Hearn. It is concluded that it is not possible to truly comprehend traditional Japanese society through a Western lens, because of the fact that people are socialized into their cultures from the time of early childhood.
