This paper provides a response to the case study “The Global Automobile Industry in 2004,” in Hill & Jones’ (2005) Strategic Management book. An emphasis is placed on the question of how the Japanese auto companies gained a competitive advantage over the Detroit companies. The paper covers such topics as lean production, excess capacity, relationships with suppliers and labor, management issues, economic impacts, emerging markets, and changing consumer demands (e.g., niche cars, built-to-order, and hybrids). The conclusion contains some recommendations for how the U.S. automobile firms can take steps toward regaining a competitive edge in upcoming years.
