18530. NAFTA AND U.S.-CANADA-MEXICO RELATIONS.As discussed in this paper, NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) was established in 1994 in order to create equal trade relations between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. However, analysts have argued that that the agreement has resulted in a “dual-bilateral” system rather than a true “trilateral partnership,” as originally intended. This seems to be due to the U.S. adopting a perspective of realism (emphasizing self-interest and national security) rather than the perspective of liberalism, as implied in the wording of the NAFTA document.
