| 17592. VOICE OVER INTERNET PROTOCOL (VOIP). Following an overview of the development of the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) which enables telephone calls to be conducted over the Internet as opposed to landlines, this paper discusses the impact of VoIP on the telecommunications industry and argues that the new technology is unlikely to literally destroy the industry, as some pessimists have predicted. It is nevertheless noted that VoIP will lead to substantial changes in the industry as the major phone companies struggle to adapt to the new realities of the marketplace and technological environment.
