This paper discusses the social and political differences among the American colonies in the period leading up to the Revolutionary War. Significant differences in economic base and religious affinity associated with the three major geographic divisions (New England, Middle, and Southern). Virginia is seen as unique for its relative lack of factional conflict prior to the war and total dominance of the elite in positions of power, while Massachusetts is notable for its extreme level of political conflict.
