| 17358. LORD BYRON'S "MANFRED" This paper provides an overview and analysis of Lord Byron’s poetic drama, Manfred. It is argued that the character Manfred is meant to represent the ideal of a “Byronic hero.” Byron expresses this ideal by depicting Manfred as an aristocrat who has become isolated from the rest of society. In addition, Manfred is shown to be suffering from an inconsolable misery, which has arisen from feelings of guilt. KEYWORDS: English poetry Byron hero guilt incest Manfred.
