| 17297. FASHION AND IDENTITY. . This paper presents an overview of the role of fashion in the construction of identity. There is widespread agreement among social theorists that fashion is a primary factor in how individuals define and express themselves. In many cases, fashion is used to express an “alternative” sense of identity (among feminists and counterculture youth, for example). Concludes that while differences in fashion are found around the world in terms of such things as gender, social class, and age, there are also cultural variations.
