ELIZABETH BOWEN & EVELYN WAUGH AND THE BRITISH CULTURAL RESPONSE TO WORLD WAR II.

17475. ELIZABETH BOWEN & EVELYN WAUGH AND THE BRITISH CULTURAL RESPONSE TO WORLD WAR II. Drawing on Bowen’s The Heat of the Day and Waugh’s Put Out More Flags, this paper examines the British cultural response to World War II and in particular considers the issue of the war’s impact upon gender roles. In both of the novels examined, there is evidence that the gender distinctions are blurred, not reinforced. Yet, both Waugh and Bowen, whether intentionally or not, also present characters who only find themselves further confined to the private, domestic sphere as a result of the war. The question of wartime gender distinctions thus remains a clouded, complex issue. KEYWORDS: WWII England gender roles bowen Waugh women occupations. Written 2004. MLA Style. 15 pages, 29 footnotes, 8 bibliographic sources. 3,696 words.   $105
