This paper presents an analysis and a case solution to a Harvard Business School case study (390017) of a 1988 oil spill at an Ashland Oil terminal near Pittsburgh. Following a brief summary of the facts of the case, an ethical and legal analysis of Ashland’s response to the crisis is presented. Ashland’s two alternative Press Releases related to the crisis are then compared and contrasted, and the ethical and legal differences between the two release identified and discussed. The concluding section of the analysis presents a draft of a different press release which reflects the appropriate stance for Ashland to take.
