13596. THE HISTORY OF FREE, UNIVERSAL PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES.This paper provides an overview and analysis of the history of free, universal, public education in the United States. Following a brief review of education in Colonial and Revolutionary America, the analysis traces the development of public education in the aftermath of the War of 1812 during the first six decades of the 19th century and through the development of compulsory education and the establishment of the "modern" system of education by the end of the 19th century. The analysis considers the theoretical underpinnings of American public education as well as the political, economic, and social factors which encouraged the development of a system of public education. 16 pages, 40 footnotes, 23 bibliographic sources. |
