The paper includes a brief history of the European Union and its attempts to link and stabilize currencies; a history of the new transnational currency "the euro" since conception in 1987 through its initial implementation in January 1999, the pre-birth traumas and successes, the long-term hopes, the short-term fears of possible breakup over various issues including possible shortcomings of the new European Central Bank, problems facing final implementation by July 2002, hopes and fears of the euro's role in international finance and possible competition with the dollar as world's leading currency.
