| 13588. CHINA: PROSPECTS AND PROBLEMS IN DEVELOPMENT. The report analyzes China's current economic status and its prospects for development through the year 2020. The investigation considers China's prospects from the perspective of three key problems or barriers to growth and development: 1) environmental degradation; 2) political instability; and 3) aging of the population. The problems and their likely impact on China's development prospects are discussed, along with the strategies to remove/reduce the magnitude of these problems. A concluding analysis forecasts best, worst, and medium-case scenarios in terms of growth in per capita GDP through the year 2020. The analysis includes a discussion and justification for the use of per capita GDP (versus another measure, such as the UNDP's human development index) as a comprehensive measure of development in China.
