This paper provides an overview and analysis of Argentina's transition to democratic rule. the analysis considers the significant factors working for and against the democratic transition, including the role of the military and the legacy of decades of military rule, Peronism, and the relation between the economy and democracy. the first part of the paper provides a historical overview of Argentina's struggle towards democracy (from the democratic governments in the early 20th century through the decades of military rule) and the first sixteen years of the transition (1983-1999).
